Respiratory disorders – better management leads to better control!

Cold/runny nose

A runny nose (rhinitis) is familiar to everyone. The causes are mostly viruses. If the symptoms are perennial it could be caused by food intolerance. However, this is called perennial rhinitis or allergic rhinitis and is characterized by inflammation in the body.

Sinus inflammation

The inflammation of the sinuses (sinusitis) can develop from a cold. The first watery, later thick mucous obstruction settles in the paranasal sinuses and the frontal sinuses. Symptoms such as dry mucous membranes or a feeling of pressure in the cheek bones and above the eyes are associated with this condition.

Bronchitis

Bronchitis is an inflammatory condition of the bronchial tube. It can be acute and chronic. In acute bronchitis the inflammation is caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi or irritants (dust). Coughing, mucus and fever are characteristic. In chronic bronchitis, permanent coughing and sputum is observed and may be triggered by foods. Chronic bronchitis is common e.g. in smokers.

Asthma - optimized Management lead to better control

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by bronchi-constriction, increased mucus production, swelling of the tissue in the lunge and irritation to nerve endings. Parts of the lungs react sensitive with cramps to certain stimuli from the environment or internal stimuli. This leads to shortness of breath.

In a recent study of 2011 Scientists (Trompette et al.) have demonstrated how the activation of the innate immune system in asthma and allergy is mediated. A protein in house dust from the house dust mite was identified. This protein directly activated cells of the innate immune system – without antibodies. This type of activation of the immune system without the aid of antibodies is an area that is being investigated expectantly, because there are still large gaps in our understanding of the complex interaction of innate and specific immune systems. Scientists hope to understand better immune diseases such as allergies and asthma.

In Germany, an estimated 5% of adults and 10% of children suffer from asthma. The number of asthmatic patients is increasing. Asthma can e.g. be triggered by environmental factors, infections, allergies, sport, temperature or food or their industrial chemical contaminants.

An allergy test may show whether specific IgE antibodies are involved, i.e. (classical food allergies). Further, cellular immune responses that emanate from the non-specific immune system can be identified with the ALCAT Test™ (food intolerance or chemical hypersensitivity). Since intolerances don’t show acute reactions they are not so obvious. Therefore, a food- and chemical scan might be extremely useful.

Asthmatics suffer often from the side effects of medications. Individual adjustment of the diet can help ease asthma. Through a diet change according to the ALCAT program, positive effects can occur, such as removal of body fat, reduced inflammation, increased breathing capacity (during exercise) and an improved circulation of blood glucose.

Have you ever wondered why you are feeling weak when you catch a cold? It is because the body needs its energy to fight the invaders. This is also what happens with food intolerance. Food particles are attacked by the same cells that fight viruses or bacteria.

Respiratory diseases are usually inflammation conditions, and are caused by external factors such as viruses, fungal spores or bacteria. If you are often ill or catch a flu, your immune system might be weak. Therefore, strengthen your immune system!

Especially asthmatics may benefit greatly from diets based on the elimination of intolerant foods. In an observational study by L. Hoj et al in 1998, 96% of asthmatic subjects experienced improvements with the ALCAT program. A total of 353 people with multiple symptoms such as gastrointestinal, eczema, migraine, asthma were among others tested for food intolerance and chemical hypersensitivity. Of 27 asthmatics 19 people improved strongly, and 7 people noticeably mild. Only one person had no improvement.

We recommend a personally customized ALCAT program for 3-6 months. The immune system can rehabilitate, relax and strengthen while the trigger foods are eliminated during this period.

The testing of chemicals for respiratory problems may be very beneficial to identify hidden triggers in environmental substances such as cosmetics, shampoo, toothpaste, cleaning supplies, garden etc.

Example II, Respiratory protocol (250/200/150 agents)

An effective respiratory scan can also be condensed:

  • 200/150/100 ALCAT or ALCAT Veg
  • 50 Chem:20 preservatives/colorings, 10 environmental chemicals, 20 pharmaceutica substances

Effectiveness and validation of the ALCAT Test ™ (selection)

Beginning in 1988 and carrying through to the present several clinical studies have been performed demonstrating the effectiveness of the ALCAT Test. Also *double-blind studies infodouble-blind studiesTo obtain an unbiased outcome the study must be carried out in double blind fashion wherein neither the doctor (investigator) nor test subject knows whether the food they are re-introducing has been indicated by the blood test as being either positive or negative. The test results are evaluated to see if they correlate with this, the, “gold standard” - a double blind oral challenge. This is a rigorous and time consuming protocol that yields an objective evaluation of both the sensitivity and the specificity of the test.
A valid test for food intolerance must measure the direct effect of food substances on precisely those cells of the immune system which are responsible for the biological effector function (chronic inflammation). If the test results are valid there should be in a concordance with symptoms (e.g., gastrointestinal complaints), and be demonstrable by double blind oral exposure.
for evaluation of the accuracy of a blood test for food intolerance were carried out to see how well the test results correlate with actually eating the food.

Why is that important?

This is important because you want the test to correctly identify reaction provoking substances; but, you also do not want the test to show false positives. The first parameter is called, “sensitivity”. The second is called, “specificity”. A false positive would cause you to needlessly eliminate a safe food. Why go through the trouble and deprivation?

Scientists have shown that in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, atopic eczema, allergic rhinitis or migraine the ALCAT Test™ can detect those foods that cause the above symptoms. The ALCAT Test™ has shown an impressive consistency in the double-blind study of 83.4% for foods. With standardized non biological substances, the accuracy is as high as 92%.

Gastrointestinal, skin & weight loss

1. In a randomized controlled weight loss trial of the Baylor Medical College, USA in 1996, the results showed that the 98% (49 out of 50) of the subjects who followed the ALCAT protocol experienced improvement for weight reduction and/or body composition. The control group showed only modest success of these parameters, and these results were statistically significant. (Kaats GR. Et al, 1996).

2. The effect of the ALCAT Test™ diet for food intolerance in patients with obesity (Akmal M. et al, 2009): The diet based on the ALCAT Test™ resulted in significant weight reduction, percentage of body fat and body mass index. During the 12 week ALCAT diet also other symptoms, such as physical performance, bloating, digestive problems, and headaches, improved.

Important notes - what does ALCAT not test for?

There is a clear distinction between the ALCAT test and other methods. Nevertheless, it is sometimes confusing.

Note: The ALCAT Test™ is not a food allergy test (Type I (IgE)! Allergy tests are measuring reactions of the specific immune system while the ALCAT TEST ™ captures predominantly cellular responses of the innate immune system.

  • The ALCAT Test™ is not a provocation test to determine a fructose intolerance, histamine intolerance or lactose intolerance.
  • It would be incorrect to confuse the ALCAT Test ™ with the cytotoxic test, a microscopic examination of white blood cells.
  • The ALCAT Test™ is not a test method to determine enzymatic defects, per se
  • The ALCAT TEST™ is not kinesiology or a hair analysis to determine food intolerance.

The ALCAT test is a validated method for identification of foods and other substances that trigger inflammation.
